Lights Out

a game about a game you're not supposed to be playing

It's 1:12 AM. You have school in five hours.

one more run.

You are the kid.

Flat on your back in October 2006, hoodie sleeves at your wrists, a silver DS Lite glowing a foot from your face. You're trying to beat NO COMPLY before the 6:30 alarm. When the hall light clicks on, you get about two seconds to slam the lid, shove it under the pillow, and fake sleep.

get caught and it's gone. the night starts over.

The bedroom

Seen only through your eyes. Read the house, hide the glow, fake sleep. There's no health bar: the clock is the red alarm clock on the nightstand, the battery is the DS power light, and danger is the color of the light under your door.

  • The TV through the wall going quiet
  • Slippers in the hall, a floorboard, the dog
  • Light under the door: you have seconds
NO COMPLY box art: two skaters at night under a streetlight, the title in cut-out ransom letters.
NO COMPLY at native DS resolution: the Strip Mall at night, the neon sign gone dark. LIGHTS OUT, the guard can't see a thing.

the game on the DS

NO COMPLY

A 3D skate game that plays like Skate 3, squeezed onto two screens at 256 by 192. Tricks are stylus flicks on the touch screen. Every level is an obstacle course with a puzzle line to crack, and two minutes a session to crack it.

  • Kickflips, heelflips, shove-its: flick them
  • Grinds, manuals, wallrides, grabs on L and R
  • Pop punk from the DS speaker, louder in the earbuds

the anatomy of a check:How a night goes

  1. Skate

Flip the DS open, drop in, and flick tricks with the stylus. Crack tonight's main line before the 6:30 alarm. Turn it down, keep the screen dim, keep going.

  2. Listen

The house tells you when it's coming, if you're listening. The TV through the wall goes quiet. Slippers. A floorboard. Then the hall light clicks on under your door.

  3. Slam it

Lid shut. DS under the pillow. Eyes closed. On Monday you get four seconds from the first footstep to the door. By Sunday you get barely more than one.

  4. Fake sleep

Eyes down to a slit. Slow, even breaths. Someone's standing in the doorway, and they can tell when you're faking.

The room flooded with hall light, glow stars on the ceiling, your hands out, a parent's hand taking the DS away.

Confiscated.

“JAKE. Hand it over.”

Get caught and the DS is gone. Game over: the night starts again from the moment you first opened the lid.

Think you're fast?
